The postearthly spirit world is the place of residence for all those who have died and are awaiting the resurrection’s inseparable connection of their spirits and bodies. Thus, it is not the place where God the Father, the resurrected Lord, and other resurrected beings dwell. Rather, it is an intermediate condition or state where people await the resurrection—a tangible sphere where disembodied spirits live in one of several conditions according to what their mortal lives have merited.

Alma 40:12: "And then shall it come to pass, that the spirits of those who are righteous are
received into a state of happiness, which is called paradise, a state of rest, a state
of peace, where they shall rest from all their troubles and from all care, and sorrow.
~ Depending on how we lived our life during this life will determine where
go in the next one. For the righteous it is Paradise. For the wicked it is the
spirit prison.
Moroni 10:34: "I soon go to rest in the paradise of God, until my spirit and body shall again
reunite, and I am brought forth triumphant through the air...”
~The Prophet Moroni knew that he was a righteous man and did not fear
death. We can learn from his example, if we life a righteous life ther is
no need to fear death. You will enter a world of happiness.
Alma 40:13: “The spirits of the wicked, yea, who are evil—for behold, they have no part nor portion of the Spirit of the Lord; for behold, they chose evil works rather than good; therefore the spirit of the devil did enter into them, and take possession of their house—and these shall be cast out into outer darkness; there shall be weeping, and wailing, and gnashing of teeth, and this because of their own iniquity, being led captive by the will of the devil.”
~The spirits that are wickeddon't get the blessings of Happiness. Before they are judged or taken down
to outer darkness they are kept in the spirit prison. There missionaries from Paradise will visit to teach those
who never got to hear the gospel. However those who did but denied it will not get that chance.
Just as paradise is not the eternal abode of the righteous, hell in the spirit world is not the eternal abode of the wicked. ~ Those who accepted the word in spirit prison will be able to leave the prison and the spirits in paradise, when satan is releashed they could lose they place in paradise. Where we go is not certain until judgement day.
In Doctrine and Covenants section 19 verse 16-18 it talks about how Christ suffered to save us that we might repent and return to him. If we do not repent of our sins the we must suffer. Suffer like Christ did. The suffereing that Christ suffered make Christ and The Father Himself tremble. A pain that is both in body and in spirit. to avoid this we must take advantage of the atonement of Christ. He did not die for us to suffer.
1 Peter 3:19: "By which also he went and preached unto the spirits in prison;"
~When we are gone from this world, work is not done. Especially missionary work, missionaries will still be sent to
the spirit prison to preach the word those who didn't get the chance to hear the word on earth.
